“Ooo!” Laney said, rushing to the bakery’s door when she spotted the shifter walking by. She yanked open the door, and the little welcome bell and her erratic appearance made Samuel sidestep a couple of paces before he stopped and eyed her like he was waiting for the attack. “You, in here, now!” she snapped, hooking a finger and stepping back to let him enter.

“If you have the gingerbread house in there, I’m the wrong age and not a man you wanna mess with,” Samuel said, suspicious of her, her strange invite, and her motives.

Laney stepped back into the doorway. “I didn’t think a bear could mimic a chicken; guess I was wrong.”

Samuel’s bear growled at the slur and the challenge to its braveheart. Samuel was a little more laid back about it, sticks and stones and all that, but he still felt the ping of the challenge within him. “Your witchy ways won’t work on me…”

When Laney started to cluck, Samuel straightened to his full height and growled under his breath. “But maybe I want cake,” he said, starting for the door.

Laney waited for him to walk inside before she tossed the door closed behind him. The metal lock hit the wood, and he whirled around, narrowing his eyes on the door and then her. “You just keep telling yourself it was cake that brought you in here if that makes you feel better,” she said, sidestepping him and going to the counter.

“What do you want?”

Laney walked behind the counter and turned with a wicked little smile on her lips. “You and your brothers out of town before nightfall.”

Samuel rolled his eyes. “Not going to happen.”

“One way or another…”

“Don’t threaten me, witch,” Samuel said. “You don’t want to meet my bear when you make me angry…”

“Seriously?” Laney cocked her head to one side. “First, you’re afraid to come inside, and now you’re threatening me with your bear?”

“I don’t hurt women, but bears can be unpredictable…”

“So, you’re going to set your bear on me?” She asked, babying him.

“I didn’t say…”

“Are you a man or a chicken?” Laney asked.

“Lady…” He stepped towards the counter and wagged a long, thick finger at her.

Laney hadn’t liked the whole finger-wagging thing since she was a child; on him, she hated it even more. She pulled on her magic and clicked her fingers, and he yelped, jumping in place before sticking that offending finger in his mouth as the sting throbbed. “I’m not a lady; I’m a witch, and before you wag a finger at a woman, you’d better decide if it’s a finger you want to keep.”

Samuel yanked the finger from his mouth with a wet pop and cursed himself for bringing a grin to her lips. “We’re not leaving,” he informed her, then took a step towards the counter. “We’re never leaving, so you had better get used to there being a clan in town.”

That was news to Laney’s ears. She’d been flying by the seat of her broomstick, and it had backfired.
